A Soldier's Thoughts -- New Book Offers Insight Into Soldier's View of War, Family While in Afghanistan

WAHIAWA, Hawaii, Nov. 24, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- A month and a half after the events of Sept. 11, author Walter E. Piatt was forced to say goodbye to his family and depart for a mission into a rocky, unknown land. He was one of the first to fight in the war on terrorism. His new book of poetry, She Came to the Door to Wave Good-bye...A Soldier's Thoughts About Family, Life and the War in Afghanistan (now available through 1stBooks), opens the door to the mind of one solider who recorded his thoughts on the meaning of war, belief and love while deployed.

Piatt, a member of the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division, begins his book with thoughts about the day he left home. The moment the transport van pulled away from his house, he saw his wife waving at the front door. That touching moment began months of thoughts and writings on the love of his family, the sacrifices soldiers make for freedom and the purpose of war.

Through concise, inspiring, free form verses, he writes of the soldiers killed in battle and how war transforms a soldier. His thoughts turn back and forth from the attack on America to the deadly operations in the rocky caverns of Afghanistan.

He also examines the "new war" emerging in the world: "As a soldier/I was always prepared/To fight/And die if required/For my country/Yet now/It is my family/That is threatened/They could die/Which drains the romance/It is now suddenly real/The enemy is no longer/At the gate or on the front/They are within/Already here..."

An intimate look inside the mind of one of the thousands of soldiers involved in the war on terrorism around the world, She Came to the Door to Wave Good-bye... offers a unique perspective from an experienced defender.

Piatt is a native of Somerset, Pa., only miles from the site where Flight 93 crashed on Sept. 11. He and his wife, Cynthia, have two children, Jessica and Joshua. He served as lieutenant colonel during his deployment in Afghanistan.
