Nokia launches TETRA System release 4.0 for optimal Total Cost of Ownership

Today, at the annual TETRA World Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark, Nokia unveiled its new TETRA System release 4.0, which gives the optimal network economy for governments, public safety organizations and operators. It will be available for deliveries during the first half of 2004.

Operating costs can form up to 80 per cent of the total cost of ownership of a TETRA network and Nokia's advanced solution cuts this cost, allowing more organizations to reap the benefits of the world's most advanced Professional Mobile Radio standard.

"The new Nokia TETRA System release 4.0 will provide superior usability and functionality for our customers. The core network is fully scaleable ensuring cost-effective operations as the network develops.  We are also introducing new innovations for radio access," says Matti Peltola, Senior Vice President, Professional Mobile Radio, Nokia Networks.

"The new system release brings benefits for all stakeholders, including lower operational expenses for network operators, tools for ensuring national security for the network owners, and even further improved personal safety for the users of the network," he adds.

Nokia has a proven track record in delivering multiswitch TETRA networks capable of providing all TETRA services uniformly countrywide. The open interfaces of Nokia TETRA solutions enable seamless integration to command and control systems. Nokia continues investing in TETRA radio technology and systems for the benefit of present and future customers.

Notes to Editors

Nokia TETRA System is a complete solution, which provides a full range of voice and data services as well as first-class security to the users.
The new system release will, for example:
Introduce new features for improved co-operation as well as prioritisation in multi-agency shared networks - perfect for urgent operations on the move.
Include the new Nokia's Dispatcher Workstation, Generation X (DWSx) - a dispatcher station capable of end-to end encryption. This compact product makes exchange of encrypted information possible without special, expensive solutions.
Further improve the remote maintenance and configuration of base stations. This means even fewer visits to sites, cutting operational expenses.
Provide the ultimate way to offer seamless communication to airborne TETRA terminals, cutting the need to build dedicated base station sites.

TETRA technology is a world standard published by ETSI for digital mobile trunking networks. TETRA networks offer secure, digital mobile communication for professional organizations such as oil and gas companies, utilities, transportation and public safety and security sector (police, emergency, civil defence, security services, etc.).  Data communication improves field operations by allowing users to access databases via their radios.
Most European countries have already chosen the open TETRA standard as the basis for their public authority radio networks, as have a number of countries elsewhere in the world.
TETRA technology minimizes the capital investments and the operational expenses of organizations because it allows simultaneous and independent use of a single existing network by many services, administrations and ministries. TETRA enhances the safety of classified information by using encryption of the connection. It also increases the effectiveness and the coordination of different services and ministries in crises and natural disaster situations through connecting independent Virtual Private Networks into one communication environment.
