ADVA Optical Networking Successfully Demonstrates A Next-Generation Global Seamless Network Solution For Deutsche Telekom

Deutsche Telekom showcases ADVA's FSP 3000 metro infrastructure solution with Metro Ethernet services at live GSN Project demonstration in Darmstadt and BerlinMartinsried

MUNICH, Germany, and MAHWAH, N.J., Dec. 11, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- ADVA Optical Networking (FSE:ADV), a leading global provider of optical networking solutions, today announced that it has successfully demonstrated a live network showcase as part of Deutsche Telekom's Global Seamless Network (GSN) Project in Darmstadt and Berlin, Germany. The GSN Project culminates months of extensive research by Deutsche Telekom into next-generation network technologies and applications, and careful selection of several participating vendors, including ADVA Optical Networking and Extreme Networks. The effort was launched by the carrier's vision for a worldwide telecommunications network managed by a single network management platform with the necessary operations and service deployment functionality.

ADVA and Extreme Networks together showcased next-generation Metro Ethernet applications based on ADVA's carrier-class Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 3000 metro infrastructure solution and Extreme Networks' Summit 7i and Summit 48i Ethernet switches. ADVA's FSP 3000 systems are deployed in a three-node ring configuration together with a remote FSP 3000 Slimline network element, which is connected to the ring through an Automatically Switched Transport Network (ASTN). The demonstration highlights Gigabit Ethernet data, storage, voice, and video traffic being dynamically provisioned and managed by ADVA's FSP infrastructure and network management platform.

The GSN Project demonstration enables Deutsche Telekom to practically explore new technologies, functionalities, and services in Metro Ethernet networks and ASTNs, including bandwidth on demand, dynamic and flexible Ethernet services, and automatic network configuration. The GSN Project will be shown to various internal divisions at Deutsche Telekom, as well as to selected customers such as large enterprises and specialized service providers. Based on further evaluation of these technologies and applications, Deutsche Telekom intends to develop specific business case scenarios for next-generation network deployments and secure a competitive advantage in the market through its technology leadership.

"Deutsche Telekom is a leading telecommunications carrier not only in Europe, but also globally. The technology foresight they have demonstrated with the implementation of the GSN Project will provide them with extremely valuable information to select and implement best-of-breed, next-generation applications. We are pleased to partner with Deutsche Telekom and demonstrate to both their internal divisions and selected customers the significant value proposition delivered by ADVA and Extreme's next-generation Metro Ethernet solutions," noted Jurgen Hansjosten, Chief Sales Officer at ADVA Optical Networking.

The FSP 3000 is ADVA's carrier-class infrastructure solution for metro access, core, and regional networks. Targeted toward carriers and service providers, the parallel use of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technology enables all protocols between 8Mbit/s and 10Gbit/s and up to 256 applications to be transported over one single fiber pair. The FSP 3000 design supports point-to-point, linear add/drop, ring, and meshed network topologies with up to ten nodes across distances up to 500 kilometers without regeneration.
