ADVA Optical Networking Qualified by IBM for New Three-Site Advanced Disaster Recovery Solution

ADVA's FSP Systems Continuously Mirror Data with Zero Loss to Second and Third Sites for Fault-Tolerant Contingency Plans Using IBM's New Cascading PPRC and Incremental FlashCopy Functions

MARTINSREID/MUNICH, GERMANY and MAHWAH, N.J., March 01, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- ADVA Optical Networking (FSE:ADV), a leading global provider of optical networking solutions, today announced that it has successfully completed testing of its Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 2000 and 3000 systems with IBM's Enterprise Storage Servers (ESS, codenamed "Shark") in a three-site advanced disaster recovery solution. Using the ESS cascading feature and IBM's newly-launched Consistency Groups technology, multiple and globally-consistent copies of data can be made either at the disaster recovery site on a periodic basis or at an intermediate site for more flexible recovery options.

ADVA's FSP systems were used to significantly extend the distance and performance capabilities for data replication to remote storage sites, maximizing available bandwidth by up to 512 applications on a single fiber pair. In this three-site disaster recovery solution, IBM's Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC) synchronous and extended distance PPRC-XD asynchronous functions were combined with incremental and multiple FlashCopy capabilities over the ADVA FSP systems. The copy functions offer maximum utilization of bandwidth for synchronous copy up to 50 kilometers, while optimizing bandwidth for remote copy transmission over extended distances up to thousands of kilometers - all the while assuring uninterrupted transmission of the PPRC signals between the three locations.

"Continuous real-time mirroring to a second data center and dedicated disaster recovery site enables customers to implement one of the most comprehensive disaster recovery solutions available today and provides the highest level of data recovery assurance in case of disaster," commented Brian P. McCann, Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer at ADVA Optical Networking. "We are extremely pleased to further our partnership with IBM by testing and introducing new, advanced solutions to the enterprise market through IBM's TotalStorage Proven Program."

ADVA first completed interoperability testing of its FSP systems with IBM's TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server using PPRC-XD advance function capabilities as part of IBM's TotalStorage Proven interoperability program in January 2003. IBM's TotalStorage Proven Program identifies specific storage solutions for customers that have been pre-tested for interoperability with products in IBM's TotalStorage portfolio. The TotalStorage Proven Program builds on IBM's extensive interoperability efforts to develop and deliver products and solutions that work together with third-party products, to help minimize potential difficulties in the deployment of storage networks.
