Smiths Selected for T-50


FARNBOROUGH, UK, July 19, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Smiths Aerospace has recently been awarded a number of contracts for systems on the T-50 Golden Eagle Advanced & Lead-in Fighter Trainer aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). Production deliveries from Smiths' facilities will begin in 2004. The ROKAF currently has a requirement for 94 platforms. Further sales are also expected in Korea and the export market.

KAI has selected Smiths for the following systems:



  --  Main generator system (Dayton, OH)

  --  Cockpit control panels, battery charging system,
      caution / warning system (Long Island, NY)

  --  Voice and data recorders (Grand Rapids MI)

  --  Advanced Data Transfer Equipment, Airborne Video
      Solid State Recorder (Germantown, MD)

KAI has also selected Smiths Integrated Standby Instrument System (ISIS) as a Backup Flight Instrument (BFI) for the KT-1 Turboprop trainer export variant.

Main generator system (MGS)

The MGS, a 40 kVA variable speed constant frequency-based generator system is a derivative of the system used on the F/A 18 C/D. Smiths is assisting the T-50 Korea Industry Participant, Kyungju Aerospace Electrical Systems (KAES) for local production of the T-50 MGS. Cockpit control panels The panels for the complete T-50 Golden Eagle front and rear cockpit provide a balanced luminescence with sun light readable displays and night vision compatible.

Voice and data recorder

The VADR is the world's most compact, lightweight, high performance crash survivable recorder with applications on multiple types of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. VADR technology is also at the heart of Health & Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) that provide safety, maintenance and mission readiness benefits.

Advanced data transfer equipment (ADTE)

Smiths is the world's leader in the supply of data transfer equipment. The ADTE is state of the art technology used to supply and download key mission information on the aircraft.

Battery charging system

The battery charger has been selected by KAI to maintain a preferred level of power to enable key equipment on the aircraft to function effectively on start up.

Airborne Video Solid State Recorder (AVSR)

The solid-state AVSR records video and key mission information that can be used for mission debriefing when the pilot returns to base.
