Extended power range for Scania's new 12-litre marine engine

SODERTALJE, Sweden, Sept. 29, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania recently introduced a 12-litre marine engine equipped with Scania's unique electronic engine management system, Scania EMS. Now the power range is extended to fulfil customer and environmental demands.

The new power range starts at 221 kW (300 hp) at 1800 r/min and goes all the way up to 478 kW (650 hp) at 2200 r/min.

"The power range is extended to meet our customers' needs as well as environmental demands," says Lennart Hjelte, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Industrial & Marine Engines.

The demand for marine engines that comply with current and future legislation is increasing and since the new DI12M EMS complies with both the U.S. Tier 2 and the European Stage 3 emission standards, the decision was made to extend the power range to give the customers a wider choice.

"Since the entire range of the new 12-litre marine engine is part of Scania's modular engine range, our customers can choose to have several engines optimised for different power outputs, but still be able to use the same parts and workshop methods. This is a clear advantage in terms of total operating economy," concludes Mr Hjelte.

Scania's marine engine range today consists of 9, 12 and 16-litre engines covering a power range from 155 kW (210 hp) to 588 kW (800 hp).

"We focus on the demanding marine commercial market," says Mr Hjelte. "We are convinced that this new marine engine will become the market's favourite thanks to a low operating cost in combination with high performance, reliability and low exhaust emissions."
