SODERTALJE, Sweden, Dec. 17, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania is the first heavy truck maker to deliver trucks fitted with engines with lower environmental impact, meeting the emission standard valid from 1 October 2005 (Euro 4). Since the start of production in September, Scania has received orders for more than 1,000 trucks. Trucks with Euro 4 engines are favoured by lower road fees in countries like Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In Germany -- where Euro 4 engines give a fee reduction of 20 cents per 10 kilometres when the Maut system becomes operational on 1 January -- Scania has so far sold about 500 trucks. The demand is also high not only from customers in Austria and Switzerland, but also among transport companies in countries with routes crossing Germany, for instance.
Scania's Euro 4 engine has an output of 420 hp and is based on EGR technology (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), which means that the emissions are cleaned by the engine combustion, without requiring either aftertreatment or the addition of urea.
``Our Euro 4 engine with its EGR technology has been very well received by customers," says Gunnar Rustad, Group Vice President Sales and Services. ``They appreciate that the vehicles can be filled up in the usual way and can be run on standard fuel, without any additives. Last but not least, the fuel economy has gained attention. Customers report that they run our new trucks at least as economically as the previous ones with Euro 3 engines."
