Gamblers Wager on Chaney's Fate as Coach

BetUS.com Posts Odds on Temple Coach John Chaney

MONTREAL, March 4, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- BetUS.com posted odds yesterday on the fate of John Chaney, and gamblers are split down the middle as to what they think will happen to the Temple coach after the college basketball season wraps up.

Chaney has been all over the news since calling on a "goon" to roughhouse with opposing Hawk players. It was a bad call on Chaney's part, which left St. Joseph's senior forward, John Bryant, with a fractured right arm, cutting his season short.

"Gambler's who follow college basketball are eager to place bets on Chaney," said Mike Foreman, BetUS.com spokesperson. "Since yesterday morning, we've taken 150 wagers on Chaney's fate as coach."

According to Foreman, gamblers have strong opinions on what will happen to the Temple coach, but half believe Chaney will step down and retire while the other half believe he'll be forced out by the Temple administration. BetUS.com has also taken a few bets wagered on Chaney's return to the Temple court next year.

"Usually we see trends in wagering of this type. Most (gamblers) will favor one side of the debate," said Foreman. "In Chaney's case, our bettors are all over the board. The public is really split on this one."

Temple University president, David Adamany, said in a statement that the administration will wait until after the season (post ACC tourney and possibly NCAA tourney) to make any decisions with respect to Chaney's coaching career with the university.

"It seems like the press is really blowing this out of proportion," said Foreman. "It's unfortunate that a kid broke his arm, but fouling hard is an everyday practice in college hoops. People need to cut Chaney some slack. I think Temple will stand behind him, and we'll see him back out on the court next year," Foreman added.

BetUS.com has various proposition bets listed about Chaney on the company's Web site.
