RESTON, Va., Sept. 28, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Defense Travel System (DTS), designed and developed by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), has successfully processed more than one million authorizations, including more than 90,000 last month. DTS is now used at more than half of the Defense Department's 11,000 sites by over 680,000 uniformed and civilian employees.
DTS is a Web-based, secure, end-to-end system that automates authorizations, reservations, voucher processing, payment and archiving for Department of Defense travel transactions. DTS replaces manual administration with automated solutions, reducing travel costs and simplifying travel management.
DTS is projected to save $178 million in productivity costs and $56 million in real dollars each year when fully deployed in 2007. DTS also has automated audit functions that detect and prevent waste and abuse, including needless expenses on unused tickets and unauthorized premium fares.
"DTS is much more than a travel service," said Rich Fabbre, DTS program manager at Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems sector. "DTS is not only a travel reservation system but also a travel management and financial management system. The result is accelerated travel processing, superior customer service and significant cost savings for the government."
DTS is currently linked to 30 Defense Department partner systems; 21 of those systems are financial.
The DTS contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems sector in September 1998. Northrop Grumman Mission Systems also developed GovTrip, an eTravel service being used by several civil government agencies.
