Hurricane Katrina Super Adoption isn't your ordinary pet adoption. Some of the 200+ adoptable animals traveled thousands of miles to escape Hurricane Katrina. New Leash On Life founder, Bobby Dorafshar, led two animal relief missions to New Orleans. He recalls, "We saved as many animals as the light of day would allow."
Teams of volunteers are diligently trying to locate original pet owners via the Internet and printed publications, reuniting approximately 25 of the 265 Katrina animals to date. For one day only, 20+ rescue organizations will gather to find permanent homes for unclaimed animals rescued in Louisiana and Los Angeles at Hurricane Katrina Super Adoption.
Some Katrina animals like Hope, a Chihuahua, cheated death more than once. As Hope's caretaker, Sarah, crossed a street in Echo Park with Hope in a pet carrier, Sarah was struck down by a motorist. The terrified Chihuahua fled the scene while Sarah was loaded into an ambulance. Hope was later located following a frantic search of the area. Hope and Sarah are now safe and sound.
Hurricane Katrina Super Adoption is hosted by New Leash On Life Animal Rescue (www.newleash.org) and Rescue For Ruffugees (www.rescueforruffugees.org). New Leash On Life has rescued and placed over 3,000 animals since founded in 1997 by Bobby & Kelly Dorafshar. Newly formed Rescue For Ruffugees is the brainchild of Kim Finger, the volunteer responsible for uniting a coalition of Southern California animal rescues responding to the Hurricane Katrina animal crisis.
