StockPickReport Commentary -- February 23, 2006
Monday night, I (Don Harrold) cooked dinner for my in-laws. What a meal! I spent hours in the kitchen (aided by my lovely wife).
Every detail was taken care of. The recipes I knew "like the back of my hand". But, I made one mistake.
You see I tried to time it "perfectly". I wanted every dish to be ready at the same time. I wanted to present it all at once "piping hot".
Sure, I could have cooked it all, set some aside, and warmed it back up when the guests arrived. But, I figured that was not the way a "professional chef" would do it.
You can imagine where this goes next. Some of the food was hot. Some was warm. Some was cold.
And, the cold food just seemed to outweigh the hot food. More dissatisfaction was felt over the cold food than happiness with the hot.
This analogy may be stretched a bit thin, but here's the point: Don't try to be cute. Don't put yourself in a position where it all has to go right to "win". The stock market is near a top and that's a perfect time to sell some of your holdings. Do yourself a favor and make some on the way up and don't try to pick the "top".
You will end up with stocks as cold as the Spanish Rice my in-laws patiently ate at my dinner table on Monday night.
