Mac Developer Alykhan Jetha Responds to Microsoft FUD Campaign on iPhone
iPhone Is Perfect for Small Business Says Marketcircle's CEO

TORONTO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 25, 2007 -- With tech titans like AT&T Inc. and Cisco Systems
Inc. lining up for what analysts indicate is a multi-billion dollar piece
of Apple Inc.'s iPhone pie, Microsoft Corp. has responded with a Fear,
Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) campaign that independent Mac developer Alykhan
Jetha doubts is on the mark. Jetha is the CEO of Marketcircle Inc., makers
of Daylite and Billings business software for the Mac.
Last week, Microsoft's Asia-Pacific head of smartphone strategy Chris
Sorenson told the press that the iPhone is "a closed device that you cannot
install applications on, and there's no support for Office documents."
Responding in his blog, Jetha writes:
"Microsoft keeps raising two arguments:
1. You cannot load third party software
2. You cannot open MS Office documents
The one thing that they seem to forget is that the iPhone has the
multi-tasking Mac OS X at its core. Mac OS X already trumps Microsoft's
Desktop OS, never mind their mobile OS. You can already read MS Word
documents with Mac OS X out of the box using TextEdit. As a developer, I
can tell you the .doc reading capabilities are right in Cocoa. You can open
PowerPoint documents in Keynote and I'm sure Apple has something up its
sleeve for Excel documents."
After making a technical case for why and how Apple's iPhone can support
business users, and in particular small business users, Jetha concludes his
blog by saying:
"Microsoft must be worried about Apple delivering a better OS on a device
than they can on a desktop, otherwise why bother with all the FUD?"
