CHULA VISTA, Calif., Aug. 22, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- FreestyleMX.com, Inc., operator of the world's largest motocross website (www.freestylemx.com) and largest international organizer and promoter of freestyle motocross events, today announced that freestyle bike star, Mary Perkins, has left the company's current national tour due to medical reasons.
The 24-year old celebrity rider, from Tauranga, New Zealand, recently gained international fame as the current world record holder for the longest jump made by a female. She is also the first, and only, female rider on the famed Crusty Demons motocross team.
However, in her eight-year riding career, she has also earned her share of injuries -- both big and small -- which, in turn, ultimately forced her to leave the current 2007 National Boost Mobile FreestyleMX.com Tour Presented by RockStar Energy Drink.
When Perkins signed-up to headline the tour in early July, she was still recovering from a serious crash earlier this year. However, after performing in only the first venue -- the "Transworld Magazine Dirt Days," held July 28-29 at the Thundervalley motocross track in Denver, CO -- her previous head injury and resulting concussion appeared to be still seriously affecting her ability to ride and to confidently perform her gravity-defying famed "Scary" Mary jumps and high-octane tricks.
As a result, she was forced to immediately discontinue her tour participation and on August 6th returned home to New Zealand for rest and recuperation.
"Injuries are an unfortunate but real aspect of the sport," notes tour organizer and seasoned promoter, Marc Burnett "and while we made every effort to have Mary Perkins continue on with us for the balance of the tour... in a reduced capacity as a featured celebrity rider just appearing to sign autographs... she felt, since she could not perform as expected... or at least at this point in time... she would prefer to immediately discontinue her participation in the tour and return home for further medical care."
The balance of the 2007 National Boost Mobile FreestyleMX.com Tour Presented by RockStar Energy Drink, will feature X-Games Gold and Silver Medalist, Matt Buyten, as the replacement headliner. The 26-year old superstar riding out of Carson City, Nevada first gained national attention as the IFMA Rookie of the Year in 2003 -- and has been flying high ever since, both literally and figuratively.
"While we regret losing the participation of Mary Perkins, we look forward to having Matt Buyten join the tour," adds Marc Burnett, "He is a true champion... and with him comes a lot of riding talent that will add excitement to each and every performance."
