CDMA2000 Delivers Industry's First Wireless Broadband Solution to Support the Needs of Public Safety Organizations

Solution to Support National Security, Emergency Response and Public Safety Services in Washington D.C.

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 8, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that leading infrastructure providers, including Airvana, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei and Nortel are offering CDMA2000(r) 1xEV-DO Rev. A broadband equipment to support federal, state and local government public safety and first responder organizations. The first such Rev. A system is already being deployed by the National Capitals Region (NCR) in Washington, D.C., with coverage including the White House and U.S. Capitol building, to support national security, emergency response and other public safety services.

"CDMA2000 Rev. A solutions enable the secure, reliable and robust delivery of a broad range of mobile broadband applications that meet the mission-critical needs of public safety and first responder agencies," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "The CDMA2000 industry will be first to deliver these vital services in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner using commercially available technology."

Deploying EV-DO Rev. A equipment offers an ideal solution to meet the wide-area mobile broadband communication needs of the public safety community, including fire, law enforcement, emergency medical, homeland security first-responders, and public servants. It enables voice communications, email access, web browsing, instant messaging, picture messaging, push-to-talk, push-to-video, video conferencing, and concurrent voice over IP (VoIP) and data services. It also provides field personnel with the ability to instantly and reliably receive and transmit critical information, such as high-resolution documents, maps, photographs, audio files, videos, and to access public safety databases.

Commercial EV-DO Rev. A public safety communications solutions offer the following vital attributes:

 * A standards-based, All-IP, unified solution - designed to meet
the current and future needs of public and private safety agencies,
while ensuring full interoperability between and among these
   organizations
 * A mature, field-proven, economical solution - enabling a
sustainable business model using commercially available equipment
   and extended coverage
 * Functionality and Interoperability with other Wide Area Network
(WAN) cellular communication systems, 802.11-based Personal Area
Networks (PAN), Bluetooth and infrared wireless connectivity,
independent of the infrastructure or terminal supplier
 * Robust, secure, state-of-the-art services - leveraging advancements
in commercial telecommunications technology, including multimedia,
connectivity, positioning and storage interfaces (e.g., MPEG4,
   H.264, MP3, WMA, REAL, E-AAC+, DVB-H, FLO, UWB, USB, MIDI, 3D
graphics, A-GPS, microSD cards, etc.) and mobile application
execution environments (Mobile Windows, Palm, BREW, Java, Linux,
   etc.)
 * Advanced Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms - enabling citizens,
emergency field personnel and authorities to communicate
'real-time' using priority-based telephony, 'carrier grade'
   push-to-talk (two-way radio), role-based user authorization,
discrete listening, call interruption and concurrent voice (VoIP)
   and broadband data services
 * Affordable, ruggedized, low power consumption terminals with large
   high-resolution displays, push-to-talk buttons, built-in Megapixel
cameras, video recorders, stereo speakers and GPS position location
technology that support extended standby and talk times using Li-
Ion, NiMH, polymer or AAA batteries
 * Flexible, deployable and scalable networks using flat IP-based
core network architecture, compact media switches and gateways,
deployable base stations and multiple backhaul options (T1/E1, IP
   terrestrial, microwave, satellite, fiber, etc.)
 * Resiliency and Sustainability using Over-The-Air Service
Provisioning (OTASP) and Parameter Administration (OTAPA)
 * Backward and forward compatibility including an evolution path
that will enable the delivery of ultra mobile broadband
applications with peak data rates reaching 280 Mbps

CDG and its members plan to work with public safety organizations such as NPSTC to define and implement products and applications that meet the needs of national and local governments.
