HONG KONG, Dec. 5, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) today announced the recipients of the 2007 3G CDMA Industry Achievement Awards, presented yesterday at a reception jointly hosted by the CDG and the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) in Hong Kong. The awards recognize individuals and companies for excellence in deploying advanced 3G CDMA networks, products and services.
"CDMA continues to lead worldwide in the deployment and proliferation of advanced mobile broadband services," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "The CDG congratulates all of the recipients of this year's awards and appreciates their contributions to the CDMA2000(r) ecosystem and the wireless industry in general."
This year's 3G CDMA Industry Achievement Award recipients are:
* Industry Leadership: Dr. Byung K. Yi, Senior Executive Vice
President, LG MobileComm, Inc.
-- Given to the individual who has provided the most dynamic
leadership in 3G industry activities, including contributions
to standards development and the growth and evolution of 3G CDMA
technologies.
-- For the last 20 years, Dr. B. K. Yi has been actively involved
in the CDMA2000 industry throughout the various phases of its
development. His leadership has enhanced global education,
standardization, research and development and the promotion of
CDMA2000 technologies. Yi also participated in 3GPP2 to develop
the EV-DO Rel. 0 and Rev. A specifications.
* Operator Leadership: KDDI Corporation and Reliance Communications
-- Given to the operators that have demonstrated leadership in the
wireless community through the expansion of 3G CDMA system
deployments and/or the unique implementation of 3G CDMA
technologies in a specific market.
-- KDDI was the first carrier in the world to commercially deploy
Broadcast and Multicast Services (BCMCS). Using its nationwide
Rev. A network, KDDI has demonstrated the advantages of
simultaneously broadcasting and multicasting rich multimedia
content over the same network it uses for mobile voice and data.
-- Reliance Communications, India's second-largest operator and the
fastest-growing CDMA operator in the Asia-Pacific region, has
deployed one of the largest all-IP networks in the world to
serve more than 36 million subscribers, more than 25 percent of
India's mobile market share. Reliance is a leader in network
coverage, overall call quality and customer service in India.
* Subscriber Technology Innovation: LG Electronics, Inc. and Verizon
Wireless for Voyager
-- Given to the companies that have demonstrated innovative thinking
in terms of services supported and terminal design. Resulting
products take advantage of the inherent benefits and latest
technological developments of 3G CDMA, offering consumers
state-of-the-art terminals in both features and packaging.
-- The Voyager is a touch-screen multimedia phone capable of
receiving TV transmissions and sending text-based communications
using a full QWERTY keyboard. The Voyager supports features
such as forced feedback on the touch screen (which vibrates when
your finger is in the right place) and dual high-resolution
screens: an internal LCD screen to complement its large external
touch screen. The device runs on Verizon Wireless' EV-DO Rev. A
network which enables much quicker connection times and higher
data speeds to enhance the user experience.
* Network Technology Innovation: Samsung Electronics for UbiCell
System
-- Given to the company that has introduced network capabilities
that allow 3G CDMA operators flexible and cost-effective
solutions for implementing advanced features and an easy
evolution path to future network enhancements.
-- The Samsung UbiCell System is the world's first commercial CDMA
Femtocell. It was deployed commercially by Sprint in September
2007. Samsung's technology provides operators with a quick,
focused, cost-effective solution that offers enhanced coverage
at home or in a small office, enabling consumers to effectively
carry one phone inside and outside and continue to benefit from
the carrier's bundled services. The solution enables wireless
operators to steer indoor wireless traffic over the public
Internet and thus achieve significant capacity savings on the
macro network, while improving the user experience.
Selected in conjunction with the MEF, this year's Consumer Award winners are:
* Innovation in Consumer Entertainment Services: SK Telecom for
Mobile Web Service
-- Given to the operator that has leveraged the capabilities of 3G
CDMA to introduce a broad array of innovative and appealing
consumer entertainment services (music, games, mobile TV, social
networking, etc.) to the market.
-- SK Telecom's 'Mobile Web Service' provides numerous innovations
that facilitate browsing the Web with a mobile device. The
service delivers full-featured Web experiences to mobile users
and enables Web portals and Web content providers to expand
their target market.
* Innovation in Consumer Entertainment Services Development: Juice
Wireless for JuiceCaster
-- Given to the application developer or content provider that has
developed innovative and appealing entertainment applications or
services (music, games, mobile TV, social networking, etc.) for
3G CDMA operators.
-- JuiceCaster allows consumers to instantly capture their own
mobile phone videos and post them to virtually any other mobile
phone or social media website. JuiceCaster is fueling the
explosion of user-generated content (UGC) and online social
networking while letting consumers browse, watch and comment on
UGC videos right from their mobile phone.
Chosen in partnership with Mobile Enterprise Magazine, this year's Enterprise Award winners are:
* Innovation in Wireless Enterprise: Cox Communications Inc. and
NetMotion Wireless
-- Given to the end-user company that has implemented a wireless
enterprise application via a 3G CDMA network with the aim of
streamlining operations, increasing worker productivity and
achieving a compelling return on investment.
-- Cox and NetMotion deployed a service technician solution that
includes 3,500 laptops in the field and the ability for IT
administrators to have a complete, system-wide view of user
activity from a single Web-based interface. Administrators can
remotely access a technician's laptop to manage and expedite
troubleshooting.
* Innovation in Wireless Enterprise Solutions Development: Sprint and
Alcatel-Lucent for SprintSecure Laptop Guardian
-- Given to the application developer that has leveraged the
capabilities of the 3G CDMA wireless medium to offer innovative
mobile applications that enable companies to streamline their
operations, increase worker productivity and achieve a compelling
return on their investments.
-- On Oct. 24, 2007, Sprint and Alcatel-Lucent began offering the
first comprehensive laptop security service for businesses. The
SprintSecure Laptop Guardian service enables 24/7 security
(through Sprint Mobile Broadband for always-on connectivity)
through remote monitoring, location detection and locking access
if a laptop is lost or stolen (these capabilities continue to
function if the laptop is powered off), helping to increase
productivity of an enterprise's mobile staff and simplify
security management, since all these capabilities are delivered
over-the-air to the laptop anywhere on the nationwide Sprint
Mobile Broadband network.
The award nomination process was open to the general public through the CDG website. Final selection of the industry award winners was made by senior CDG executive members as well as representatives of industry associations and the trade media community.
