New Fire Interruption Device Knocks Down 40-Foot Flames in Pennsylvania Home Fire

NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP, PA--(Marketwire - September 17, 2008) - When Neshannock Fire Chief John DiCola and Fire Captain David Congini responded to a local 9-1-1 call requesting fire department assistance, they appeared on scene to find 40-foot flames shooting from the roof of a single-story Neshannock Township home. With his full crew still several minutes away, Chief DiCola knew it was only a matter of time before the entire structure collapsed to the ground. To buy critical time and control the fire, Capt. Congini suggested using a newly acquired piece of technology, ARA Safety's FIT-5, a tool he had successfully deployed in a basement fire two weeks prior.

"As soon as we popped [the FIT-5] in there, we saw the aerosol fill the room and the visible flames ceased," Chief DiCola said of the deployment. "In this situation I would estimate the FIT-5 bought our department an additional four-to-eight minutes, enough for three supporting area fire trucks to arrive with water."

The extra minutes made a substantial impact, as the home was located in a rural area where access to water supply was limited. Chief DiCola said approximately 3,000 gallons of water were used to fully extinguish the fire, which is half the amount he estimates would have been needed had the FIT-5 not been used.

"The FIT-5 has proven to be a very effective tool in our arsenal against the enemy," said Chief DiCola. "After two successful real-life applications, we're sold on the technology."

This deployment was the second made by the Neshannock Township Fire Department in less than two weeks and is one of more than ten deployments in North America since the device made its debut in late 2007. The powerful new technology is being credited by fire departments nationwide with helping firefighters suppress fires safely and efficiently.
