IKONICS Appoints Lockwood Carlson to Board of Directors


DULUTH, Minn., Feb. 23, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IKONICS Corporation (Nasdaq:IKNX), a Duluth based imaging technology company, announced today that Lockwood Carlson has been appointed as a director; expanding the Company's Board of Directors by one. Mr. Carlson will stand for re-election as a director at the 2009 annual meeting of shareholders, together with all of the Company's other current directors.

Presently, Dr. Carlson is President of Carlson Consulting Group, a Minneapolis-based consulting firm providing strategic development foresight to organizations with a concentration in technical products/services. Past and present clients include Fortune 500 companies in an array of markets, including medical devices, chemicals, advanced materials, instrumentation and systems design. Dr. Carlson also serves on several other corporate and non-profit boards.

Dr. Carlson holds the James Renier Chair in Technological Leadership at the Center for the Development of Technological Leadership at the University of Minnesota, where he is on the faculty and teaches in the Management of Technology program.

Dr. Carlson received his Ph.D in Physics in 1971 from the Univ. of Wyoming and retired from 3M Company where he served as Corporate Scientist. He led research efforts in thin films, electrophotography, solid state materials, and electronic imaging, and was Laboratory Manager of the Consumer Video and Audio Tape business. Later, Dr. Carlson served as Chief Scientist for a major Department of Defense program in 3M involving electromagnetic materials and thin film deposition processes.

As Corporate Scientist at 3M, Dr. Carlson formed and led the Theory and Modeling group for the company, including efforts in optical polymer films, fiber optics, fuel cells, LCD display optics and data storage technology. In 1997, Dr. Carlson helped form the Corporate Enterprise Development department which identified, developed, and incubated new business opportunities, from internal concepts as well as outside technology acquisitions. He also developed technology strategy for the corporation using "Foresight" processes to match emerging technology trends to high value business opportunities that aligned with corporate growth strategies. He provided the technical leadership for 3M's Corporate Venture program.

Dr. Carlson is a member of the American Physical Society, IEEE, World Future Society, and the Association of Professional Futurists.
