ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., June 2, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Absoft(r) Corporation today announced further advancements in Fortran performance on AMD based systems with Absoft's recently released service pack 10.2.1. A recent, independent comparison of Fortran compilers from 10 different vendors, 16 different benchmarks, on Windows and Linux systems, conclusively demonstrated that Absoft Pro Fortran v10.2 with service pack 10.2.1, generated the fastest executing Fortran programs on AMD Athlon(TM) X2 processor-based Windows systems, and the fastest executing Fortran programs on AMD Athlon(TM) X2 processor-based Linux systems. Testing on Mac OS was not performed, but Absoft states the same v10.2.1 compilers are available for Apple's latest multi-core systems. Prices for Absoft Pro Fortran start at $299.
The testing was conducted by Polyhedron Software Ltd., UK., a Fortran consultancy and software provider, and utilized the well known Polyhedron 2009 benchmark suite. In the benchmarking process, each compiler is required to run with a single set of options for 16 different tests and each test is run a minimum of 10 times. No tuning or option changing for individual programs is permitted.
To ensure consistency, all tests were run using a benchmark harness on the same hardware. Compilers tested were generally available, current production releases. The individual tests were developed and collected over several years to aggressively stress the compilers in different real world situations. Compilers tested included: Absoft, ftn95, g95, gfortran, Intel, Lahey, Nag, Sun, Pathscale and pgi. The Absoft Fortran code was on average 6% to 70% faster on Windows and 4% to 68% faster on Linux, than the Fortran code generated by the other vendors.
