Nikon Instruments Opens Popular Vote for This Year's Nikon Small World Competition

Popular Voting Open for Annual Competition of Photography Under the Microscope

MELVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 10, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nikon Instruments is opening up its Small World Photomicrography Competition for the public to choose its favorite image for recognition as the Popular Vote winner. Visitors to www.nikonsmallworld.com have until 5:00 pm EDT on October 2, 2009 to vote for their favorite "winning image" from among the top 100 finalists chosen by this year's panel of judges from over 2,000 entries. The Popular Vote winner will be recognized along with the 2009 Small World winners selected by the judges this fall. These top images represent the most visually stunning and technically proficient entries.

"The Popular Vote fosters a wonderful involvement between the public and these awe-inspiring images," said Eric Flem, Communications Manager, Nikon Instruments. "It was our wish to keep giving both scientists and non-scientists the chance to make the call on their favorite images so that scientific imaging continues to maintain its visibility to the general public, artistic and scientific communities."

Now in its 35th year, Nikon Small World is the oldest and most respected competition of its kind. The competition, which has become the preeminent forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope, celebrates the world's best photomicrographers who create beautiful imagery while showcasing a wide variety of advanced scientific disciplines. Nikon Small World recognizes photomicrographers for their achievements in capturing dynamic images at the intersection of science and art.

Top images from the 2009 Nikon Small World Competition will be exhibited in a full-color calendar and through a national museum tour. For additional information, please visit www.nikonsmallworld.com.
