"The Company stated in its latest 10-Q that fertilizer buyers continue to be skittish regarding the global recession, precipitating a sharp and unprecedented drop in orders and prices of phosphate and nitrogen. Expected declines in potash prices following the collapse in global credit, froze potash buyers into a wait-and-see posture. Farmers began working off inventories, awaiting more clarity in the potash market.
"Potash buyers in China and India, as well, held off finalizing contract negotiations with the Company, while Brazil began replenishing inventories during the quarter ended June 30, 2009, ahead of its planting season. North American potash application orders plunged 40% between July 2008 and June 2009, a record decline on a year-over-year basis. This record drop severely depleted inventories in the United States."
