ATMI Introduces New Anti-Static Film That Triples Shelf-Life of Single-Use Powder Transfer Containers for Life Sciences Applications

Extended Anti-Static Properties Reduce Costs and Allow Increased Efficiencies in Measuring, Storing, Transporting, and Dispensing Powders

DANBURY, Conn., Sept. 29, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ATMI, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATMI), today announced the expansion of its line of Newsafe(TM) contained Powder Transfer Bags with the introduction of bags fabricated with a new anti-static polymer film that increases the number of bioprocessing applications through its significantly extended shelf-life.

The new powder transfer system is fabricated with Permanently Static Dissipative (PSD) film, a patent-pending material whose excellent strength, flexibility, and transparency allows the delivery of powders to any single-use or reusable processing vessel fitted with an industry-standard triclamp interface. Newsafe contained Powder Transfer Bags made with PSD film exhibit anti-static properties that improve powder recovery and prevent buildup of electrostatic charge, resulting in significant process efficiency and safety benefits. Adding to their versatility is a tripling of shelf life to 36 months, compared to just 12 months for other anti-static powder transfer vessels currently available.

The PSD film technology was developed by ATMI LifeSciences, which specializes in ultra-clean polymer films, single-use mixing systems, single-use bioreactors, delivery systems, and ultraclean single-use bioprocess vessels for the biopharma and bioprocessing industries.

Using animal derived component free (ADCF) materials and compliant with U.S. and European pharmacopoeia standards, the PSD film is extruded in-house by ATMI in HEPA-filtered air under cleanroom conditions. Newsafe PSD bags are manufactured in an ISO Class 5 environment to ensure cleanliness that meets or exceeds the most demanding powder transfer and storage requirements.

"Companies can capitalize on this unique combination of benefits in a greater number of instances," said Richard Bhella, Global Product Manager for Single-Use Storage & Delivery Technologies at ATMI LifeSciences. "The shelf life increases the container's usefulness for long-term storage or shipping. Customers can even purchase and store powders that are delivered in pre-measured amounts, which facilitates quick, clean, and less expensive addition of critical powders to their processes."

Like all single-use technologies from ATMI LifeSciences, Newsafe PSD products improve process efficiency by lowering the number of cleaning and validation steps, reducing process downtime, and eliminating potential sources of cross-contamination between batches. Their light weight makes them appropriate for transfer, storage, shipping, and dispensing media, buffers, filter aids, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and excipients, among other dry powders.

Newsafe contained Powder Transfer Bags employing PSD film are available immediately through ATMI LifeSciences and its distribution channels.
