SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - December 8, 2009) - Today, Mochi Media released the results of
the Flash Games Market Survey, the first comprehensive picture of the Flash
games market and those who are creating it. The Flash Games Market Survey
was conducted by Mochi Media in partnership with Adobe, Newgrounds,
FlashGameLicense.com and JayIsGames, and surveyed 1,104 Flash game
developers and publishers. The study includes the industry's first
benchmark data around the demographics, location and economics of Flash
game developers and publishers.
Data from the survey conveys the rapid growth of the emerging Flash gaming
industry and the revenue opportunities for developers. Twenty percent of
respondents noted that they already make more than $1,000 per month off of
their games, reflecting the quick maturation of monetization techniques for
Flash games. More established online content mediums, such as blogs and
music, typically have had a significantly lower percentage of creators that
receive an equal level of compensation.
The Flash Games Market Survey also showed that developers use multiple
methods to monetize their games, ranging from advertisements to licensing
to micro-transactions. Nearly one-third of developers noted in the survey
that they are monetizing their games in four different ways, while half are
using two. Around-game advertising was the most popular method, with 58
percent using them; sponsorship followed with 43 percent, while a quarter
of respondents said they also got revenue from licensing, ads on Web sites
and custom game development.
Lastly, the survey showed that the Flash game industry is rapidly growing
with almost two-thirds of all developers responding to the survey to say
that they started making games within the last two years, and
three-quarters of publishers starting their portals within the last two
years. According to comScore, more than 1 billion people play online games
every month, with more than 100 million people playing games on the Mochi
Media network every month.
