Channel One News to Air Special Program "1969-2009" Documenting Young People's Changing Views on Important Issues of the Day

Network Goes Back to University of Colorado; Uncovers Compelling Generational Shifts to Update CBS News' Seminal 1969 Documentary "CBS REPORTS: Generations Apart"


NEW YORK, Dec. 9, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Channel One News, the preeminent news and content provider for teens, today announced it will dedicate its full news broadcast on Monday, December 14 to a special program entitled, "1969-2009," comparing the views of today's young people on important issues with those of their 1969 counterparts based on a CBS News documentary that was first broadcast forty years ago.

That unprecedented documentary, "CBS REPORTS: Generations Apart", explored generational conflicts based on an in-depth survey of 1300 young people across the country, along with on-campus interviews with University of Colorado college students and their parents. The survey addressed such hot topics of the day as money, race, religion and war - themes that show strong parallels to the nation's most pressing current issues and remain top concerns for today's millennial generation.

Channel One News recently conducted its own survey of 1300 young people to offer a comprehensive comparison of these distinct generations. Channel One also visited the University of Colorado at Boulder, posing questions to students exactly as CBS News had done on campus in 1969. At that time, the University of Colorado had been chosen for its diverse and nationally representative student body.

The special program, hosted by Channel One News anchor Justin Finch, uncovered notable distinctions and intriguing similarities among the two groups over the forty year span. Specifically, opinions surrounding war and patriotism, as well as relationships with parents showed the most significant differences, while attitudes about money proved equal over time.

Interestingly, with unemployment rates currently at 10% versus 3.5% in 1969, the two generations faced very different economic climates, yet 60% of young people then and now stated they would welcome less of an emphasis on money.

In 1969, sixty percent of young people agreed it was worth fighting a war to contain communism. Today, just 20% of respondents state support for fighting a war against Muslim extremists. Patriotism amid time of war shows a significant decline as well. In 1969, fifty-five percent of young people stated its importance, while today that figure drops to just 32 %.

The generational divide between these young people and their parents shows a notable shift towards more positive relations. In 1969, just over half of young respondents (57%) said they enjoyed their parents company. For today's millennial generation, that figure jumps to 64%.
