Blockbuster Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates an entertainment retail chain of movies and video rental outlets. In addition to in-store rentals, the Company offers online and kiosks services by which customers may request mail or digital delivery of entertainment products. The Company also operates stores under the brand name GAME RUSH in Canada, Italy, Mexico and Denmark.

"During the 2009 holiday season, the Company attempted to seize advantage of a 30 to 45-day availability waiting period announced by Fox and Universal as well as a 28-day restriction window issued by Warner. The Company sought to offer new titles from the three studios to its customers before competitors Redbox and Netflix were able to offer these titles.
Management expected that its remaining brick-and-mortar business stood to benefit from the entertainment industry's window of unavailability during the 2009 holiday season. Declining domestic net rental revenue from same-store sales did slow - sales in October dropped 15.4%, 12.6% in November and 9.4% in December. However, revenue didn't climb as anticipated."
