NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 19, 2010) - The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. (AJLI) today announced that Emily Anne Staples Tuttle of the Junior League of Minneapolis is the recipient of the Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award. The award, named after the founder of The Junior League Movement and one of the Association's most prestigious awards, recognizes a Junior League member whose ability to motivate volunteers, overcome challenges and create positive change provides inspiration to women everywhere.
"Emily Anne has devoted her life to voluntarism and inspiring women to share ideas in order to support their communities," said Delly Beekman, President-Elect of the AJLI Board and member of the Junior League of Monmouth County. "She is a long-time supporter of women's issues and continues to encourage women to get involved in leadership roles to make a difference in their communities."
In addition to her role as a leader of the Junior League of Minneapolis, Emily Anne has been a Minnesota State Senator, a Hennepin County Commissioner and an advisor to former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura. She was also instrumental in organizing the first Minnesota Women's Political Caucus, the first Women's Institute for Social Change, the first Minnesota Women's Economic Roundtable and the United Nations Association of Minnesota.
Past recipients of the Mary Harriman Award, established in 1990, have included Glenda Hood, former Florida Secretary of State and former Mayor of Orlando; Sandra Day O'Connor, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice; Martha Rivers Ingram, Chairman of Ingram Industries, Inc.; former Missouri State Senator Betty Sims; and Karen Cullen Luke, who helped lead the Oklahoma City recovery and rebuilding effort after the 1995 bombing.
