DETROIT, MI--(Marketwire - April 22, 2010) - The Detroit-Windsor truck ferry began on Earth Day, 1990. Gregg Ward and his father John had a vision of starting an environmental industrial logistics company that could safely transport hazardous loads, such as flammable items and corrosive materials that would not be allowed to cross the boarders between the U.S. and Canada either through the Detroit Windsor Tunnel or the Ambassador Bridge. Little did they know that that kitchen table meeting 20 years ago would create a centerpiece green company that would become a critical part of American-Canadian industrial logistics.
The Detroit-Windsor truck ferry is responsible for saving millions of truck miles over the years, as trucks take a short ferry boat ride across the Detroit River rather than traveling hundreds of miles out of their way to find a land crossing. The ferry service was credited for saving the American auto industry after 9/11 as the border crossings were clogged due to increased security. The truck ferry was able to keep a constant timely flow of parts between the auto factories in both countries, which are vital to the economy in the area. With the growing demand of wind power, the ferry is capable of moving wind power components that require large logistical oversized loads.
When asked in a recent interview on WVSN, Industry Visions, what was the most important attribute of the ferry's industrial logistics, Ward commented, "Without a doubt it's the ability to provide safe, secure, and consistent border crossing services to our truckers. This requires extreme attention down to every detail... even to our electric ramp hoist that is the critical link between the ferry and shore. Because of the rugged environment we work in we have chosen Harrington Hoists because of their reliability, and because their hoists are manufactured RoHS green compliant."
Gregg went on to say, "We are proud to be part of Earth Day history on this 40th anniversary, and the contribution we have made to industrial logistics as a green company."
Industry Visions WVSN is a national industrial broadcast about critical industrial endeavors that benefit humanity around the world.
