SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - May 24, 2010) - Save Our Water, California's largest statewide water conservation public education program, today announced its sponsorship of the Flower and Garden Show at the 2010 San Diego County Fair. Fairgoers will have the opportunity to learn about the importance and benefits of saving water when they visit the Flower and Garden Show, where displays will include water-efficient gardens and California-friendly flowers.
"The San Diego County Fair draws more than 1.2 million people, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to spread our water conservation message to those fairgoers this summer," said Mark Cowin, director of the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), which created the Save Our Water program in coordination with the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA). "Californians already know that the state needs to save water -- our job is to show them how to make water conservation a daily habit. Our partnership with the fair will help us reach San Diegans with that message."
The San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons/Sav-on, is the sixth-largest fair in the U.S. and the largest and oldest annual event in San Diego. Last year, the fair, which is held at the county fairgrounds in Del Mar, set a record attendance of 1,274,442 people. This year, the fair will take place from June 11 to July 5.
"The fair has been recognized as an environmental leader with industry-leading recycling programs and its commitment to preventing storm water pollution. We're delighted to partner with Save Our Water this year to highlight water conservation," said fair spokesperson Linda Zweig.
As part of the partnership, Save Our Water is a major sponsor of the Paul Ecke Jr. Flower and Garden Show and is co-sponsoring, along with the San Diego Water Authority, the Watersmart Landscaping Award. In addition, the program will host "Save Our Water Day" on Saturday, June 19, when the first 1,000 families will receive a water conservation gift bag.
In addition, the fair and Save Our Water are offering a coupon for a discounted admission (a savings of $24 on a Value 4 Pack) when a short water conservation survey is completed at www.saveourh2o.org. The Save Our Water program will also be included in the fair's marketing efforts.
"Rain or shine, water conservation is critical to our state's economy and way of life," said Timothy Quinn, ACWA's executive director. "This partnership is a win-win for the Save Our Water program, the San Diego County Fair and, most importantly, generations of Californians to come who deserve a future with a reliable water supply."
Save Our Water, which was created in 2009, is aimed at helping Californians make water conservation a daily habit. To learn more about the Save Our Water program and ways to conserve water, visit www.saveourh2o.org or follow the program on Facebook or Twitter.
