TLC Laser Eye Centers First in Southern California to Offer a New LASIK Eye Surgery Enhancement Technique

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - July 2, 2010) -  TLC Laser Eye Centers (www.TLCVision.com) today announced it is the first to offer the Femtosecond assisted excimer laser LASIK enhancement eye surgery at its 12 centers throughout Southern California. An excimer is an ultraviolet laser which is well-suited for delicate eye surgeries such as LASIK.

Precision in corneal flap cutting is also essential in LASIK eye surgery. Femtosecond lasers offer an alternative to the mechanical cut. Femtosecond laser technology is gradually revolutionizing refractive eye surgery, enabling surgeons to create thin LASIK flaps or remove intrastromal tissue rather than perform excimer laser ablation.

LASIK enhancements are follow-up eye surgeries that are used to correct residual refractive errors (i.e. over- or under-corrections) or to suit the visual needs of a patient's changing lifestyle (e.g. monovision correction -- a technique that reduces the need for reading glasses or bifocals).

With the advances in LASIK laser technology and the increased experience of eye surgeons, enhancement rates have significantly dropped. For example, TLC Laser Eye Centers' surgical success rate is exceptional, with only 1% of its patients needing an enhancement because they didn't achieve 20/20 vision in their first eye surgery. However, some cases might still occur that necessitate enhancement eye surgery.

According to Dr. Thomas S. Tooma, the Medical Director for TLC Laser Eye Centers in Southern California and renowned eye surgeon who has performed more than 100,000 vision correction procedures, "TLC Laser Eye Centers are the only ones in Southern California utilizing this new technique in which the eye surgeon uses the laser to re-cut a new flap on the cornea. The advantages to the patient include reduction of dry eyes, mechanically stronger cornea and no epithelial ingrowth. Of the 100 enhancements I have personally performed; all have had their vision restored to 20/20."

Dr. Tooma recommends waiting at least six months after your original LASIK eye surgery before undergoing an enhancement. This allows ample time for your prescription to stabilize after your original LASIK eye surgery.
