Northwest Electric Power Cooperative Goes Digital With Exalt

Exalt Microwave Backhaul Systems Deliver SCADA and Corporate Data, and Support SmartGrid Applications for Missouri Power Generation and Transmission Company

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - July 27, 2010) -  Exalt Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul, today announced that Northwest Electric Power Cooperative of Cameron, Missouri has deployed Exalt microwave backhaul systems to deliver critical information in its power generation and distribution network. The Exalt microwave backhaul systems connect power substations, generating facilities, and customer service offices to the Cooperative's SONET fiber systems throughout their operating footprint in northwestern Missouri.

Northwest Electric Power Cooperative (NWEPC) has used microwave backhaul systems in its network since 1964 to support voice and low capacity SCADA data. But when it came time to upgrade its legacy analog microwave infrastructure with digital systems to backhaul vast amounts of data from business expansion including new substations, new service offerings, new IP-based applications, and other requirements such as the SmartGrid government initiative, NWEPC selected Exalt microwave backhaul systems for their superior performance and the company's legendary customer service.

"Our Exalt systems deliver the performance we need today and well into the future, and Exalt customer support has been phenomenal," said Kirk Lee, communications supervisor at NWEPC. "Many microwave companies treat utilities as second-class customers, but not Exalt. They have really raised the bar."

The Cooperative's choice of Exalt all-indoor systems made it even easier and more cost-effective to replace the legacy microwave systems. "In some cases, the new Exalt systems are connected to waveguides and antennas that are more than 25 years old," added Lee. "Not only do the Exalt systems support both native TDM and Ethernet, they also have allowed us to leverage legacy infrastructure, saving us time and money, and without any trade-off in performance."

"Superior systems and superior customer support have made Exalt the preferred partner of electric power companies throughout North America," said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "Our microwave radio systems uniquely deliver the native TDM and Ethernet capabilities that allow utilities the flexibility to build on existing TDM infrastructure investments while they migrate to IP, and to do it with extremely high performance and reliability. This pay-as-you-grow functionality is a cornerstone of our business, and it reaps great rewards for our customers who want to eliminate the high costs, business disruptions and support challenges often associated with migration to new technology."

The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems -- indoor, outdoor, and split-mount -- offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
