EnergySolutions Wins Second Major New-Build Contract in China

New Processing Facility Will Provide Efficient and Cost Effective Disposition of Operational Wastes From 8 New AP1000 Reactors

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - August 4, 2010) -  EnergySolutions, Inc. (NYSE: ES) announced today that it has been selected to provide waste management systems to new AP1000 reactors being built as a part of the extensive nuclear new build program in China.

China Power Investment Corporation (CPI), an energy corporation which is developing nuclear power as a key component of its core business to supply electricity in a safe, environmentally friendly and economical manner, is constructing 6 AP1000 reactor units (with reservation for another two) at its Haiyang site in Shandong Province China. The Reactors will be operated by Shandong Nuclear Power Company (SDNPC), a subsidiary of CPI.

The contract to design, equip and commission the Site Radioactive Treatment Facility (SRTF) for the treatment and storage of liquid, wet solid and solid wastes has been awarded by CPI and SDNPC to a consortium between EnergySolutions' international subsidiary EnergySolutions EU Ltd. and Yuanda Environmental Engineering Company, a subsidiary of CPI.

"We appreciate the opportunity to work with SDNPC as well as CPI and its subsidiary company Yuanda in further developing nuclear power as a vital source of clean energy in China," said Val Christensen, CEO and President of EnergySolutions. "We look forward to supporting our customer in the delivery of this exciting vision."

EnergySolutions will develop the conceptual design for the SRTF, will supply all of the key processing technology and equipment and will work with SDNPC to ensure that the SRTF is commissioned and brought online to the agreed cost and schedule. The SRTF will utilize EnergySolutions High Integrity Containers and proprietary de-watering systems to deal with some of the more difficult waste streams and will integrate the best technologies available for solid waste treatment from a variety of high quality vendor partners.

This project builds on the Yangjiang Contract awarded to EnergySolutions earlier this year and will be another significant technical milestone and breaks new ground in China's move towards ever cleaner energy production.

"This is another remarkable opportunity to play a vital role in new nuclear build in China as clean nuclear power gathers momentum," added Mark Morant, President, EnergySolutions International Group. "As a worldwide leader in nuclear waste management, our technologies, innovation and key personnel will provide invaluable service to this project."

EnergySolutions offers customers a full range of integrated services and solutions, including nuclear operations, characterization, decommissioning, decontamination, site closure, transportation, nuclear materials management, processing, recycling, and disposition of nuclear waste, and research and engineering services across the nuclear fuel cycle.
