OPNET Acquires DSAuditor(R) Product Line From Embarcadero Technologies

Extends OPNET's High Definition Application Performance Management(TM) With Deeper Visibility Into Database Transactions

BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 27, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPNT), a leading provider of IT Service Assurance solutions, announced that it has acquired substantially all the assets associated with the DSAuditor product line from Embarcadero Technologies, Inc., a privately held software company headquartered in San Francisco, CA. The acquisition contributes key capabilities to OPNET's product portfolio for application performance management (APM).

DSAuditor is a software product that provides deep visibility into database activity and performance, delivering detailed insight into its impact on end-to-end application performance. It passively monitors a broad range of metrics, capturing high level business information such as database usage by application, as well as low-level forensic data for troubleshooting. DSAuditor enables IT organizations to diagnose performance problems more quickly, and to optimize performance by analyzing database structure and usage.

According to Alain Cohen, OPNET President and CTO, "OPNET is recognized for the breadth of our application performance management solutions, with real-time end-to-end visibility obtained from multiple sources including application components, the network, and the end-user experience. The DSAuditor software further expands our breadth, while also providing detailed, fine-grained information that is critical for accurately determining root cause. These attributes -- breadth and depth -- are key to the High Definition approach to APM that is embodied by our products."

Other solutions in OPNET's High Definition APM™ suite include OPNET Panorama® and ACE Live™. Panorama extracts vast amounts of performance and forensic data to support APM from the server perspective. It continuously monitors thousands of system and application metrics within each server, across all application tiers, and automatically spots performance anomalies. Its patented correlation technology automatically detects patterns in metrics and events, revealing cause-and-effect relationships and pinpointing issues that might otherwise go undetected.

ACE Live is an appliance-based solution that monitors and analyzes end-user experience as well as the underlying network infrastructure. It provides complete visibility of transactions and users across the enterprise, with detailed real-time and historical information about end-user response times, utilization, route quality, ISP performance, and traffic patterns. On-board analytics extract user-level transactions from network traffic, and break down application response time, identifying which components are contributing most to delays.

"DSAuditor is a natural fit for our solution suite, offering numerous options to enhance and extend APM work flows," stated Dr. Ed Sykes, OPNET Sr. Vice President and Chief Scientist. "For example, a user of ACE Live observing a slow end-user transaction could determine with DSAuditor the issue at the SQL transaction level that is causing the delay. In the case of Panorama, its patented analytics could correlate data from DSAuditor with metrics for other application tiers to detect and diagnose performance anomalies. This is an exciting new differentiator for OPNET, since most other APM suites lack adequate database performance insight."

Commenting further, Cohen stated, "Our philosophy in application performance management is what we call 'high definition': the broadest coverage of the end-to-end view, the deepest set of rich and complementary data sources, industry-leading analytics of each component, all integrated and correlated into a service assurance view. The DSAuditor technology allows us to extend the OPNET APM Suite to include a high definition approach to database transaction monitoring."

The transaction is expected to have a near neutral impact on GAAP earnings per share for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, and become accretive to OPNET's GAAP earnings per share next fiscal year. OPNET plans to bring DSAuditor capabilities to market as an integrated part of its APM suite in calendar year 2010.
