Fuel Your School: Chevron Gas Stations to Drive $1 Million to Local Public Schools

Funds Available Through Retail Promotion to Help Support Classroom Projects for Public Schools in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties

SAN RAMON, CA--(Marketwire - September 1, 2010) -  Consumers in Alameda and Contra Costa counties can support their local public schools by simply filling up their gas tanks. From Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, Chevron's Fuel Your School promotion will donate up to $1 million to help bring resources and materials to local classrooms. Chevron will donate $1 every time motorists purchase eight (8) gallons of fuel or more at any participating Chevron stations in either county.

Educators at up to 640 eligible public schools in Alameda and Contra Costa counties will have the opportunity to apply for new materials to enhance learning in their classrooms through the Fuel Your School promotion. Consumers can track how much money is being raised in their city as well as see funded projects and feedback from educators who have been helped by visiting www.FuelYourSchool.com.

The Fuel Your School promotion is part of the company's global Energy for Learning Initiative which partners with local communities, governments and non-profit groups to expand learning opportunities and support the development of the social and economic vitality of these communities.

"As a Bay Area company, Chevron is committed to supporting and improving our local communities," said Dale Walsh, president, Chevron Americas Products. "The innovation that drives our business depends on education based on science, technology, engineering and math. We are invested in helping to provide students with the resources and tools they need to become future leaders and innovators."

Program organizers encourage eligible public and charter school educators from Alameda and Contra Costa counties to join the program at DonorsChoose.org. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related classroom projects will be considered for funding as part of the Fuel Your School promotion.

"Our mission at DonorsChoose is to improve public education by empowering every teacher to be a change-maker and enabling any citizen to be a philanthropist," said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. "We are pleased that, along with Chevron, we can help support the teachers and students of the participating schools in Alameda and Contra Costa counties in assisting them in getting the resources they need."

Chevron is also introducing the Chevron Classroom Challenge where $250,000 in grants will be awarded to ten different public schools with the most innovative projects from the Fuel Your School promotion. Project requests submitted and entered in the Chevron Classroom Challenge through DonorsChoose.org during the Fuel Your School promotion will be scored by a panel of judges. The most innovative STEM-oriented classroom projects that receive the highest scores will win one of ten $25,000 grants being awarded.
