NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - September 8, 2010) - King & Spalding announced today that corporate lawyer John S. Herbert has joined the firm's New York office as partner. Herbert will serve as a senior member of the firm's private equity, mergers & acquisitions and securities practices.
"John is ranked among the top private equity lawyers in New York, and we are pleased to welcome him to our firm," said Raymond E. Baltz, Jr., head of King & Spalding's corporate practice. "We have built a solid transactional support base in New York with experts in mergers and acquisitions, tax, executive compensation and employee benefits, leveraged and asset-based finance, high-yield debt offerings, real estate, intellectual property, and financial restructuring. John's addition to this New York team strengthens our ability to provide superior, comprehensive expertise and high-quality service to our clients."
Herbert advises private equity funds in connection with their portfolio investments in public and private companies, including initial acquisitions and platform startups, divestitures, add-on acquisitions, leveraged loan financings and high-yield offerings, and various exit transactions such as dispositions, initial public offerings and recapitalizations.
Additionally, Herbert advises private equity portfolio company management teams on their participation in buyouts and other private equity investments by funds. He also represents private equity fund sponsors in connection with the formation and operation of private equity funds.
Herbert received a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from George Washington University Law School, an M.B.A. degree from Harvard University and a B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
"I am excited to be working with King & Spalding's corporate team and look forward to becoming an active contributor to the firm's continued expansion in the private equity area," said Herbert. "The firm's deep industry expertise in the energy and healthcare sectors is particularly impressive -- an important factor for me, as I expect private equity funds to be very active in these industries in the future."
Herbert's arrival at King & Spalding complements the recent addition to the firm's New York office of Crayton L. Bell, a mergers and acquisitions and private equity partner specializing in the energy sector, in August, and Kenneth A. Raskin, an executive compensation and employee benefits partner, in May.
King & Spalding's private equity practice consists of more than 150 lawyers in offices across the United States, Europe and the Middle East who are dedicated to understanding and achieving their clients' objectives using a practical, problem-solving approach. The practice draws on these lawyers' extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, leveraged finance, Islamic finance, securities offerings, tax, compensation and benefits, fund formation and restructuring, as well as the firm's deep industry experience in areas such as energy and infrastructure, real estate, healthcare and life sciences, business services and technology and telecommunications. King & Spalding is regularly ranked highly among law firms most involved in the investment, mergers and acquisitions and financing transactions that are integral to private equity investment and exit strategies.
