SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - November 22, 2010) - The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) has selected Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny (D-San Diego) as the recipient of its 2010 Legislative Leadership Award for her efforts on California water issues.
The award is presented to legislators for outstanding achievements in water policy or remarkable efforts to advance key water legislation. Sen. Ducheny served her final year in the Legislature this year due to term limits.
The award, to be presented Dec. 2 at ACWA's 2010 Fall Conference & Exhibition in Indian Wells, recognizes Ducheny for being an important voice of reason on many major water issues during her tenure in the California Legislature. In addition to serving as the Senate's lead negotiator on budget-related issues, Senator Ducheny carried several key water-related bills on topics such as the Salton Sea, water quality and groundwater.
She also authored and secured passage of important bills on behalf of ACWA, including this year's SB 1284, which addressed inequities in mandatory minimum penalties for discharge permits under the state Water Code.
"Thanks to the tenacity of Senator Ducheny on SB 1284 and other bills, the Legislature passed legislation that addressed problems identified by the water community while also addressing concerns raised by the environmental community," ACWA President Paul Kelley said. "She deserves our appreciation and our recognition for her years of service to California and support for California water solutions."
ACWA is a statewide association of public agencies whose 450 members are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California. For more information, visit www.acwa.com.
