TEMPE, AZ--(Marketwire - December 8, 2010) - Working through 15 diverse challenges within a few months time, two teams of undergraduate forensics students at the University of Advancing Technology (UAT) got down and dirty with forensic investigative techniques. Competing in the annual DOD DC3 Digital Forensics Challenge, they were given a series of security-based problems such as steganography, data recovery and even investigating a master file table record. The DC3 Challenge is designed as a way for digital forensics population to establish new techniques, methodologies and tools to fight cyber crime, and the UAT students were thrilled to contribute.
Both the SlUethAT and UAT007 stood out in a crowd of 71 other teams comprised of civilians, government and even military groups. Placing 2nd overall in the undergraduate teams and 14th overall, SlUethAT was proud of their hard work. Team member Daniel Dean commented, "We did exceptionally well; placing 14th out of all 71 teams that competed from around the world that included professionals in the forensics industry was fantastic."
The teams learned more than just new forensics skills; collaboration, time management and skill proficiency were all a part of the learning curve as these teams took on new obstacles and worked in groups. Montellese Biscoe of the UAT007 team placed 8th in the U.S. overall, thrived in the DC3 competition, but stated, "It really put into perspective of how hard it is to go from concept and theory to actual practical use and application."
In the end however, the hard work paid off as new intellectual gains were realized. "It was the challenge: testing our abilities... forcing us to go out there and learn on our own," Montellese commented. "And then just the satisfaction of solving these challenges and knowing that you are working on the same challenges, solving the same challenges as other forensics experts out there."
