Siemens Building Technologies Division Issues Its Second Sustainability Report

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill.,, Feb. 17, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In support of its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility across every aspect of its business, the Building Technologies Division of Siemens Industry, Inc. announced today the release of its second annual sustainability report. The 2010 sustainability report builds on the information and momentum created from the Building Technologies Division's first sustainability report released in 2009.

The new report provides an update on the divisional sustainability activities over the past year, tracking the Division's progress making sustainability a part of its organizational mission, and reporting the Division's emissions inventory. The 2010 report also highlights key successes and initiatives during the early stages of the company's sustainability efforts.

"Certainly we are proud of what we've accomplished, but we realize there is much more we can and must do," said U.S. Building Technologies Division President, Andreas Schierenbeck. "We intend to push the organization to achieve even more as we look to find opportunities to use our resources more efficiently and change for the better our interaction with our local and global environment."

To date, perhaps the Division's greatest accomplishment has been the commitment of its network of Local Sustainability Champions in place across the company's 110 field offices throughout the U.S. Through their dedication and hard work, these individuals have stepped up, leading local teams to make the company's sustainability vision and mission a reality each day.

In support of these local efforts, a Sustainability Eco Fund Program was established in 2009. Now widely embraced by the Sustainability Champion community, this innovative program has enabled many of the company's branch offices to jump-start local programs and implement a range of sustainability efforts resulting in improved recycling, greater energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR labeling, LEED certification, and energy cost reductions. Similarly, these initiatives are providing a morale boost, as well as a source of pride and accomplishment as employees marshal local resources to reach their sustainability goals.

When the Building Technologies Division's Internal Sustainability Committee was formed in 2007, it comprised a cross-functional group of Siemens professionals whose roles and responsibilities were impacted by – and could influence – the company's sustainability efforts. "When we look back at the last year, we are not only proud of what we have achieved, but are excited about the significant progress we have made towards institutionalizing our sustainability program and integrating it into all aspects of our business," said Ari Kobb, director of green building solutions and co-chair of the sustainability committee. "We continue to create awareness around many of the internal initiatives we have taken on. Each year we gather more data and refine the way we do business as it relates to sustainability."

Siemens Building Technologies' sustainability efforts are predicated on four core "Pillars of Success."  The four pillars, Products, Operations, Solutions and Transparency are detailed in the report; concepts firmly embraced by employees and business units across the company. The four pillars continue to serve as guidelines, underpinning key internal sustainability initiatives, as well as the basis for the ongoing measurement of the program's impact with the employees, local communities and the marketplace.
