BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - March 31, 2011) - With the rise of minimally invasive procedures like Botox and other injectables, there is more buzz around so-called "liquid facelifts." However this might be a confusing misnomer, says Dr. Ioannis Glavas, founder of the Glavas Centre for Oculo-Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
"Using any sort of injectable filler is not a replacement for a surgical facelift," states Dr. Glavas. "Surgery is the 'gold standard' because it allows precise sculpting of facial features to directly address issues like bone structure, fatty deposits, and muscle positioning. Cosmetic surgery is really the only way to get long-lasting, permanent results."
That being said, liquid injectables are a safe, temporary alternative for people who want to "touch up" problem areas like wrinkles and sagging skin. "Many people prefer an injectable filler because they don't want the risk that comes with any surgical procedure, or the long recovery time. And that's perfectly fine," Dr. Glavas adds. "I offer my patients all the options, and for many, injectables are the solution. But I make sure they understand the difference between the two procedures."
Consultation with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon is crucial for clients to understand all their options, Dr. Glavas said. In some cases, for example, injectable fillers like Botox are not always going to make a significant difference; a cosmetic surgeon will be able to explain why.
Dr. Glavas also notes that surgical facelifts are the fastest growth procedure sought by men. According to statistics recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), facelifts among men grew by 14% in 2010. Soft tissue fillers were third-highest at 10% growth.
"It's not the male models driving up the numbers, these are everyday men who want to look as good as they can throughout the aging process," Dr. Glavas states. "I expect that the number of men looking for cosmetic procedures will continue to climb over the next several years, and that I'll see more and more men coming into the Glavas Centre."
