COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 15, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Union at Ohio State University hosted over 200 competitors for the 2011 US National Rubik's Cube Tournament from August 12 - 14. With a mind-boggling average time of 9.91 seconds, Breandan Vallance of the United Kingdom spun his fingers to victory. Coming in 2nd place – and first among all Americans – is new US National Champion, Dan Cohen from Allentown, PA. With an average time of 10.13 seconds and a top solve single of 7.93 seconds, Cohen is proud to be the new US Rubik's Cube Champion.
It's hard to imagine but his best solve of 7.93 seconds pales in comparison to world record holder Feliks Zemdegs of Australia who holds the distinction at 5.66 seconds.
Currently marketed in the US by Winning Moves Games and Hasbro Games, the Rubik's Cube is the world's all-time, greatest-selling toy or game with more than 250 million sold to date. The puzzle was originally invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, a professor at the Hungarian Academy of Crafts and Design in Budapest. There are 43 quintillion combinations of positions.
