VISTA, CA--(Marketwire - Dec 1, 2011) - McCain Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of intelligent transportation systems, traffic control equipment and parking guidance solutions, today announced another successful contract for its ATC eX 2070 traffic signal controllers. The contract for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which includes more than 100 ATC 5.2b compliant controllers as well as a comparable number of 332 traffic controller cabinets, solidifies the importance of adhering to current standards.
Advanced Transportation Controller (ATC) standards assist state and local governments in the early deployment of ITS technology in both urban and rural environments. "ATC standards have long been recognized by transportation professionals, but their role has never been as vital as it is today," said Kleinjan Deetlefs, vice president of engineering for McCain Inc. "With agencies, such as VDOT, looking to utilize advanced technologies to modernize and integrate their transportation systems, it's crucial that hardware and software comply with ITS standards in order to ensure compatibility and seamless operation of the various subsystems."
The proprietary nature of transportation field equipment often limits one product's ability to operate with an alternate manufacturer's product, locking agencies into a single supplier. ATC standards overcome this and help promote competitive procurement. As an ATC-compliant traffic controller, McCain's ATC eX 2070 is software independent allowing it to work with or without McCain's local intersection control software installed. In this instance, the ATC eX 2070's open architecture allowed VDOT to upgrade to more dynamic, modern field equipment without jeopardizing interoperability with their Fourth Dimension's "D4" traffic signal software.
"To modernize the nation's infrastructure in the face of limited funds, it is more important than ever for us [manufacturers] to commit to producing products based on national standards that promote fair and open competition," Deetlefs continued. "And that's exactly what we're aiming to do."
McCain's ATC eX 2070 controller is part of the company's comprehensive ATC traffic controller suite that provides one solution for any cabinet type, including Caltrans, NEMA TS 2, Type 1 or Type 2, and ITS applications. The entire suite of ATC controllers is available with or without Omni eX® intersection control software, an NTCIP-compliant firmware that offers all the latest trends in firmware including more complicated intersection control and advanced data collection for optimizing traffic flow.
