WASHINGTON, Feb. 15, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) was honored with the American Medical Association's (AMA) top government service award for elected officials, the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. She was presented with the award at a dinner in Washington, D.C., as part of the AMA's National Advocacy Conference.
"The AMA is proud to recognize Sen. Stabenow's service to Michigan and her dedication to improving health care, especially for children and seniors," said AMA Board Chair Robert Wah, M.D. "Sen. Stabenow is a strong advocate for preventing childhood obesity and improving school nutrition, supporting parity for mental health coverage and making prescription drugs more affordable for seniors. She has also been a champion for eliminating the failed physician payment formula to stabilize Medicare for patients and physicians."
Sen. Stabenow is one of six honorees chosen this year to receive the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. The award, named for the founder of the AMA, recognizes elected and career officials in federal, state and municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.
"The Dr. Nathan Davis Awards allow the AMA to honor government officials who are committed to using their important positions to improve public health in our nation," said Dr. Wah. "The recipients of this award represent various branches of government and have a unique ability to improve the health of Americans and protect the patient-physician relationship."
Sen. Stabenow was nominated for the AMA award by the Michigan State Medical Society. This year marks the 23rdanniversary of the Dr. Nathan Davis Awards.
