NEW ORLEANS, March 28, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Medline Industries, Inc., today introduced octylseal(TM), an innovative tissue adhesive, at the 59th Annual Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Congress in New Orleans, La. AORN is the largest gathering of OR nurses in the world.
Octylseal, which can be used to close a variety of surgical incisions and trauma-induced lacerations, offers patients a more comfortable recovery as an alternative to sutures. Octylseal also offers excellent cosmetic results because it does not leave marks on the skin that could be made by sutures. When used in conjunction with sutures or tapes, octylseal aids wound closure and protects against water. Octylseal also creates a microbial barrier when used as a liquid bandage on top of other closure devices, such as sutures or tapes, as long as the seal remains in tact.
"Octylseal's unique formulation provides a strong and flexible film to protect the wound once it dries on the wound so it won't crack and peel off like some other tissue adhesives," said Bridget Donovan, product manager for Medline's dermal management system division.
Octylseal's unique formulation offers several other advantages, including higher viscosity, or thickness, than other competing products, so it will not spread to areas outside of the wound area, which allows physicians to more accurately apply octylseal to the wound. Octylseal is also less exothermic (less generative of heat upon application), which promotes greater patient comfort. Octylseal is more skin friendly and cures with the natural moisture of the skin, rather than with harsh chemicals as some other conventional adhesives use.
Octylseal is also more user friendly since it will not dry out prematurely after the tube is opened, even when interchanging applicator tips, which allows doctors to complete a procedure without opening additional containers.
