Boston Marathon Runs on Versatile

MARLBORO, MA--(Marketwire - Apr 16, 2012) - Versatile Communications Inc., a premiere IT integrator that specializes in high-availability infrastructure and business solutions, announced today their sixteenth year supplying the Boston Marathon's mission-critical infrastructure whose requirements for wireless support and security has grown.

The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world's most prestigious road racing events. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) manages this American classic. John Hancock Financial Services sponsors the event. And Versatile Communications supplies the Marathon Race Day Network on which the event staff, global media, medical responders and runners all depend.

With tens of thousands of participants and a course running through eight cities and towns, the network Versatile designs and manages must keep event staff and emergency responders connected as well as ensure real-time race information is available. Additionally, the network must support the media's needs for coverage -- a critical component to race day -- which, according to BAA, the marathon ranks behind only the Super Bowl as the largest single day sporting event in the world. Network downtime is not an option.

Security of mobile solutions at the edge of the network is also critical as the use of more wireless connections increases. Many runners now use their cellphones while racing. The network supports several systems developed to provide information to families and friends of the runners to assist family members in locating runners.
