When cooking, a dash or two of vinegar is the perfect solution to add zest to a dish or to balance out flavors. The varieties of vinegar used in cooking include favorites such as: apple cider, balsamic, red wine, rice, white wine and white distilled vinegar. Many vinegar infusions can be created with fresh herbs or fruits for endless flavor possibilities.
White distilled vinegar is a cost-effective, all-in-one cleaner that can be used in all rooms of the house. An online survey by The Vinegar Institute found that cleaning and disinfecting are the second most popular uses for white distilled vinegar. Vinegar can remove laundry stains, shine windows, and banish mildew.
Vinegar also can be used to manage blood glucose levels. Eating foods that are high in starch, such as bread and rice, causes surges in blood glucose. These high levels of blood glucose have been linked to increased cardiovascular disease risk in healthy populations and can also increase complications among those with Type 2 diabetes. According to research from Arizona State University, consuming small amounts of vinegar - 1 to 2 tablespoons - before your meal can reduce these high levels of glucose. As always, consult your doctor about any health issues that you may be experiencing or before you begin any nutrition program.
