AMCA's BIM-MEP(AUS) Initiative Attracts Record Crowds at Software Release Roadshows

MELBOURNE, Australia, May 6, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The BIM-MEPAUS Software Roadshow demonstrations were successfully launched in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne during 16-19 April 2012. Nearly 500 industry stakeholders across all four events witnessed the demonstration of the AMCA's BIM-MEPAUS standardized workflows, equipment models and software.

Collaborative software development by Technical Sales International (TSI) and KarelCAD was highlighted, as the fervently-anticipated BIM-MEPAUS Autodesk® Revit® Add-in bi-directional integration with the Autodesk MAP fabrication software was proved. As a result of 18 months' development of content and standards in accordance with BIM-MEPAUS Practices, the software will contain BIM-MEPAUS approved content, standards, protocols, templates, training and technical schedules.

BIM-MEPAUS is an AMCA initiative that facilitates the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) within the Australian Construction Building Services Sector. BIM-MEPAUS Practices dissolve the barriers that are currently preventing the effective take-up and use of BIM within Australia:

  • Significant time and cost burdens involved in customising BIM modelling software to suit Australian design and construction requirements;
  • Lack of industry standards around BIM Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) documentation;
  • Poor consideration of the requirements for IPD; and
  • Limited BIM Project Management and file management expertise within the industry.

The BIM-MEPAUS initiative provides a unique approach to addressing these issues by drawing on the expertise of many of Australia's leading designers, specialist MEP contractors, product suppliers and BIM software firms and resellers.

"The BIM-MEPAUS Autodesk Revit add-in and MAP Software solution tools are effective and workable, and will form productive workflows for the industry," noted Jim Reis CFO of Technical Sales International. "Recognising this, a number of contractors, consultants and sub-contractors have signed-up to the software and will now commence projects. The number of suppliers and manufacturers agreeing to work toward developing their modelling content is very encouraging to the industry."

The standardized workflows combine BIM-MEPAUS Models with BIM software to ensure that agreed and consistent standards are applied and implemented through third party validation. There are two BIM-MEPAUS Model Content Libraries available:

1. Revit Models for Design, available from KarelCAD: These include generic and manufacturer-specific Autodesk Revit MEP software families, pursuant to BIM-MEPAUS Standards.

2. MAP Models for Fabrication, available from Technical Sales International (TSI): These include fabrication-specific MAP Software detailing components, pursuant to BIM-MEPAUS Standards.

The BIM-MEPAUS standardized workflows, equipment models (content libraries) and software development offer a range of benefits that form the industry software platform for building design, construction and facility management. The content is designed in co-operation with designers, manufacturers and suppliers, with the end user in mind, and the workflows are established in cooperation with the AMCA.
