LAPEER, MI--(Marketwire - May 22, 2012) - Theatre rental location is the first step in every stage production. A new growing trend of "theatre-going" is vaulting an old familiar friend to new levels of popularity in the city where it had its start more than 70 years ago.
The PIX Theatre was originally built in 1941 by George Smith, a passionate actor who toured with theatre troupes near the era of World War I. Smith promised never to subject his audiences to anything but the finest entertainment that Hollywood motion pictures would have to offer. The small art deco theatre was named the PIX serving Lapeer and surrounding communities from 1941 until its closing in 1995 when it could no longer compete with the high tech multiplexes. After sitting vacant, the property was purchased by the city of Lapeer in 1996 with hopes of eventually restoring the iconic structure. Initial restoration was completed in 1997, and dreams of further restoration came to pass in 2011. In a recent interview on WVSN Reports, Craig Martin, Executive Director, spoke about his labor of love restoring the marquee. "The PIX has always been on the cutting edge of innovation in our community. In fact if you walked by the theatre back in 1941 you would see a sign that said 'It's cool inside.' That was because the building was air conditioned even way back then! Because this theatre has always been special to our town, we wanted to make sure our restoration effort was worthy of such an iconic building. This was a major restoration and we are proud of it," said Martin. "The original marquee, erected in 1941, underwent a total restoration. It was thoroughly sandblasted removing all rust and repairing some dents. Upon completing the repainting and metal work, we also repaired the lighting which included replacing all of the neon, returning it to the brilliance it once had during its golden era. The PIX has had a tremendous resurgence in attendance of our live performances; we don't show movies ourselves anymore, but we do host film festivals throughout the year. We have great affordable theatre rental rates. We want the PIX to serve not only the local community but have a regional foot print serving all of South Eastern Michigan, whatever the theatre production may be." http://www.pixlapeer.org
