LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND--(Marketwire - May 29, 2012) - Alfredo Montenegro of Guatemala City, Guatemala, has been chosen as the second winner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s "Show Your Best" initiative. Montenegro, the second of three grand prize winners to be announced, has been awarded a trip to the London 2012 Olympic Games, and segments of his winning video will be featured in a TV spot that will be shown in the stadiums and by broadcasters around the world during the Games.
A local league basketball player whose father taught him how to play, Montenegro's training routine includes jumping with weights and working around both school and work to ensure he can continue competing. His winning submission was selected from among hundreds of videos submitted from people in over 50 countries who have participated in the campaign.
Asked why he loves the Olympic Games, Montenegro said: "It's the biggest sport event in which an athlete can participate. The simple act of representing your country to compete against the best from every other country must be an experience of great emotion and pride."
The decision was made by the IOC and former and future Olympic athletes, including Shawn Johnson (USA), Charmaine Crooks (Canada), Pernilla Wiberg (Sweden), Fabiana Murer (Brazil) and Beckie Scott (Canada). Submissions were judged on how well the video represented the Olympic values (excellence, friendship and respect); how well it demonstrated the idea of "Showing Your Best"; and how inspiring the video was overall.
The "Show Your Best" campaign is a global campaign and video competition aimed at engaging young people with the Olympic Movement and creating the next generation of Olympic fans by encouraging people from around the world to demonstrate their personal best. Entrants have a chance to win a number of prizes, including a trip to the Olympic Games. Users can record, upload and share their talents and skills -- whatever they may be -- on the Olympic site www.olympic.org/showyourbest.
The deadline for submissions to become eligible to win the third and final trip to the Olympic Games is 15 June.
