MUNDELEIN, Ill., Aug. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In just a few short weeks, more than 230 hospitals, nursing homes, schools, breast cancer support groups and other community organizations have already signed up to enter Medline Industries, Inc.'s second annual national Pink Glove Dance video competition in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. Now they will have the option of dancing to Katy Perry's hit song "Part of Me" in their videos. Her song joins Cascada's "Evacuate the Dance Floor," Jay Sean's "Down," Martina McBride's "This One's for the Girls," and several others as the official songs of the competition from which contestants can choose to feature in their own Pink Glove Dance videos.

To register for the competition and for complete rules, go to www.pinkglovedance.com. The deadline for submissions is September 28, 2012.

All videos will be posted on www.pinkglovedance.com beginning October 12 where the public can go online to vote for their favorite video. The winners will be announced November 2, with the winning team receiving a $10,000 donation in their name to the breast cancer charity of their choice. The second place winner will receive $5,000 and the third place winner will receive a $2,000 donation.

"We're very excited that the Pink Glove Dance has the support from some of the most popular entertainers in the world today," said Andy Mills, president of Medline. "In just a few weeks since announcing the competition, we now have almost twice as many participants than all of last year. And the more participants, the better chance our message of hope and support will reach those impacted by breast cancer."

A year ago, Katy Perry's hit song "Firework" was featured in the winning Pink Glove Dance video submitted by Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia,S.C. The medical center won with 61,054 votes — more than four times the population of their entire city of West Columbia (14,061).

Medline, the creators of the YouTube® sensation Pink Glove Dance and makers of the pink exam gloves, sponsored the first Pink Glove Dance video competition last year in which 139 organizations from 40 states and Canada participated. In all, more than 17,000 people were featured in the videos, which are all available for viewing at pinkglovedance.com.

The competition quickly became a national social media phenomenon with the videos receiving more than 1.2 million views, a half a million votes and thousands of tweets, blogs and texts.

History of the Pink Glove Dance

The original Pink Glove Dance video premiered in November 2009 and featured 200Portland,Ore. hospital workers wearing pink gloves and dancing in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. Today the video has more than 13.6 million views on YouTube® and has inspired hundreds of pink glove dance videos and breast cancer awareness events across the country.  Because of the overwhelming response to the original video, a sequel was produced in October 2010 featuring 4,000 healthcare workers and breast cancer survivors throughout North America.

"Gloves are the first point of contact between the health care worker and the patient," said Mills. "As a way to extend our breast cancer awareness campaign, we developed a line of pink gloves called Generation Pink®, with the aim of getting people to talk about breast cancer."

Medline is donating a portion of each sale of the pink gloves to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). To date, Medline has donated more than $1 million to the NBCF to fund mammograms for individuals who cannot afford them.
