immixGroup Foundation Golf Tournament Raises $125,000 for Johns Hopkins

More Than $900,000 Donated for Cancer Research and Clinical Training Since 2005

MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 5, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The immixGroup Foundation announced today it has raised $125,000 to support cancer research, education, and patient care at Johns Hopkins. The foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with immixGroup, Inc. immixGroup helps technology companies do business with the government.

Proceeds from the immixGroup Foundation's eighth annual charity golf tournament, held at Lansdowne Resort on October 2, brought the total amount raised on behalf of Johns Hopkins to more than $900,000. These proceeds will fund the immixGroup Foundation Surgical Oncology Fellowship in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins. The fellowship, launched by the immixGroup Foundation in 2009, provides funding for an individual post-doctoral research fellow and equips him or her with the skills to become a leader in the field of academic surgical oncology. This two-year program incorporates a year of clinical training followed by a year dedicated to cancer research. To learn more about the fellowship and the individual fellows, watch this video developed by Johns Hopkins.

The 2012 immixGroup Foundation Fellow, Dr. Danielle Bischof, arrived at Johns Hopkins in July. Dr. Bischof attended medical school at the University of Toronto and subsequently completed its general surgery program. In 2012, she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Bischof's clinical interest is in the area of surgical management of gastrointestinal cancers and her research interests lie in cancer survivorship, specifically in improving patient-centered outcomes after surgical treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. She plans to complete a master's degree in clinical research methods through the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health during her second year of the fellowship.

Last year's immixGroup Foundation Fellow, Dr. Fabian M. Johnston, arrived at Johns Hopkins in July 2011. Dr. Johnston attended Penn State College of Medicine and completed his residency at Washington University in St. Louis after leaving Louisiana State University as a result of Hurricane Katrina. In the past year, Dr. Johnston has obtained training in advanced surgical oncology and focused on his clinical interests including gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer. Dr. Johnston's second year in the fellowship will be spent pursuing a master's degree in clinical investigations with an emphasis on patient centered outcomes research at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In addition, he will also be an Armstrong Institute Patient Safety and Quality Scholar. In this endeavor, he will obtain advanced training in patient safety and quality improvement.

Year-after-year, the immixGroup Foundation Charity Golf Tournament continues to benefit from the strong support of the government technology community and local businesses. Top-level sponsorship support came from McAfee, KBZ, OSIsoft, HP, Citrix, Baker Tilly, and Brocade.
