IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 15, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The City of Anaheim and the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), with design assistance from KTGY Group, Inc., Architecture + Planning, recently broke ground on the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). ARTIC is a $184 million multimodal transportation facility that will connect Anaheim, Orange County, the entire Southern California region and beyond. KTGY serves as the Urban Design Advisor for the project. In that capacity, the firm prepared ARTIC's Master Plan, ARTIC's Mixed-Use District Conceptual Development Guidelines and provided architectural design review services for the project.
This world-class transit station, which broke ground on September 18, 2012, will accommodate 10 modes of transportation including: High-Speed Rail, California/Nevada maglev trains, Metrolink and Amtrak trains, OCTA local bus service, Ontario International Airport remote check-in FlyAway bus service, Anaheim Resort Shuttles, Anaheim Rapid Connection (ARC) Resort Streetcar System and taxi service. The project will be a gateway where people transfer between transportation services to reach employment centers, activity areas, residential districts and tourist/entertainment destinations in Southern California, thereby helping relieve traffic on local streets and freeway systems.
KTGY was hired in 2007 to establish the overall Vision and Master Plan for the ARTIC project through build-out. The ARTIC transit station will be integrated with mixed-use development consisting of retail, dining, entertainment, office, hospitality and residential uses implemented in multiple phases over the next 20 years. The ARTIC Master Plan also establishes synergy between ARTIC's Mixed-Use District, the existing major entertainment/sports venues in the immediate vicinity of The Platinum Triangle (ie., Honda Center, Angel Stadium of Anaheim and The Grove of Anaheim); and the greater Anaheim community including the Disney Resort and Convention Center District.
KTGY also assisted the City of Anaheim and OCTA with the procurement and selection of the station's architect as well as the public art component to be located in the ARTIC building. Renowned architecture firm HOK utilized KTGY-designed ARTIC Mixed-Use District Conceptual Development Guidelines in designing the landmark multi-modal transportation hub facility envisioned by the City, OCTA and the project team. ARTIC's iconic main terminal shell reaches 120 feet tall and covers 56,000 square feet. Clark Construction Group is the general contractor for the transportation center. The project was designed to achieve LEED Platinum level certification.
International Landscape Architect and artist Mikyoung Kim was selected for the public art component. Her work is seen throughout the U.S., the Middle East and South Korea. Kim has designed a number of public spaces that merge sculptural experience with sustainable landscape strategies.
KTGY's Ken Ryan, who heads up the firm's Community Planning and Urban Design Studio said, "The City of Anaheim and OCTA assembled an impeccable team to implement the vision. We were honored to be part of that team and establish the vision, direction and guidelines allowing for ARTIC to become a reality." Past City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle offered this comment, "KTGY has been instrumental in not only preparing a well thought out Master Plan for this important district, but also has been invaluable as our Design Advisor throughout the entire process. This was a complex process and project. KTGY's understanding of design, entitlement and vision were critical to our success."
ARTIC is located in the heart of Orange County, the fifth most densely populated county in the nation and California's 10th largest city. The site is conveniently situated within walking distance of three major entertainment venues in Anaheim's Platinum Triangle: Honda Center, Angel Stadium of Anaheim and The Grove of Anaheim; and near employment centers, the Anaheim Convention Center, and Disneyland. Orange County attracts nearly 43 million visitors per year, with the City of Anaheim attracting up to 20 million visitors per year.
