OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 23, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Kirk E. Miller, an administrative law judge and a former long term health care attorney, was named as President of the Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC - www.acmedctr.org) Board of Trustees during the Board's annual meeting held at Highland Hospital last night. Miller replaces Daniel Boggan, Jr. who completed a three-year term as board president and remains a Board Trustee.
Serving as an ACMC trustee since 2006, Miller is well versed in health care, having served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. Following his time at Kaiser, Miller was appointed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as Deputy Secretary and General Counsel of the California Natural Resources Agency. He has also served as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for American Medical International, Inc. He is currently a Judge in the California Office of Administrative Hearings.
"Kirk Miller's knowledge of the law and health care regulation will advance the cause of public health in Alameda County," said outgoing President Daniel Boggan. "The residents of the County have benefitted greatly from his leadership, and will benefit even more with him in the President's position."
A sought after speaker and thought leader on business and regulatory matters, Miller has held many important advisory positions including Vice Chair of the American Bar Association's White Collar Crime Committee on Healthcare Fraud & Abuse. He is also a member of the Conference Board's Council of Chief Legal Officers among others.
Miller is a member of the California, Colorado and Texas Bar associations and is a member of the Bay Area General Counsel Association. He is a former Director of the San Francisco Legal Aid Society and the Oakland Museum.
As a Trustee of Alameda County Medical Center, Miller is former chairman of the Board's Finance Committee and sits on its Executive Committee and Adhoc Committee on Long Range Financial Planning. He holds a J.D. degree from the Syracuse University College of Law.
Boggan continues his roles as a member of the Board's Quality Professional Services, Human Resources and Executive committees as well as a member of the Adhoc Committee on Long Range Financial Planning. Boggan, who was formerly City Manager of Berkeley, is also a former Chief Operating Officer of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was a Vice Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley. He has served as president of the ACMC Board of Trustees since 2010 and has been a trustee since 2005.
"Daniel Boggan served as president with great distinction and was instrumental in guiding the Medical Center through a period of tremendous transition," said ACMC Chief Executive Officer Wright L. Lassiter III. "We're very fortunate that he will continue to lend his expertise as a strategist, planner and leader as we move toward full implementation of the Affordable Care Act."
Boggan's work as an ACMC Trustee is being recognized in February at the First Annual Outstanding Director's Awards in San Francisco. The awards, sponsored by The San Francisco Business Times, the Silicon Valley Business Journal and Ernst & Young, honors outside directors whose service to their boards has been exceptional.
